Helpful Hints and Links for Job Seekers

Looking for work can be like having a full-time job - you need to:

  • apply yourself to the task
  • do your research and keep your information current
  • make sure your skills match those in demand
  • identify and use networks

.... and to be ready to seize the opportunities that come your way.

At NovaSkill we know this can be a daunting task, so we'd like to do our bit to make the process a little easier.

Firstly, you need to do your research so you can understand what kind of job you're most interested in, and suited to.

Websites such as the Job Guide, myfuture Job Juice can assist. NovaSkill has a range on FAQ Sheets on popular apprenticeship and traineeship occupations - please refer to the list at the top right of this page.

The NSW Department of Education and Training can also provide information on Apprenticeships and Traineeship.

Secondly - once you've made your choice of career, you need to think about the skills you may need to be competitive for jobs in your selected area.  Training organisations such as NovaSkill offer a range of courses to assist people prepare to enter the work force - for details on available courses with NovaSkill click here

There are also a number of other training organisations and resources that can provide pre-employment training - you might like to contact TAFE, or check out the Australian Apprenticeship Access Courses that are available in your vicinity

Third - build and use networks to help you find work. The more people who are aware of the type of work you're looking for, the greater your chance of finding work. There are organisations that specialise in helping people get work - for example Australian Job Search details the Job Services Australia members that are contracted by the Australian Government to assist jobseekers.

Organisations like NovaSkill work with employers to place apprentices and trainees into employment - click here to view our current jobs.

Fourth - get it all down on paper.  You need to be able to leave a prospective employer with a summary of your skills, abilities and qualifications - this is known as a resume or CV.

Websites such as Job Juice provide on line services to help you write your resume

Fifth - you need to be ready for the opportunities that come your way.  You need to prepare for each interview by focusing on the specific job and business  - remember, the interview may be your only chance to make a positive impression - don't waste it!

Websites such as CareerOne  and MyCareer provide some great tips on how to prepare for an interview
